Pratt PSPD and Pratt Institute in the News

Alec Appelbaum and Ron Shiffman both appeared in the New York Times recently, and Pratt received a Climate Leadership award!

‚ÄčAlec Appelbaum Pens New York Times Op-Ed
On May 31, The New York Times featured an opinion piece written by PSPD Professor Alec Appelbaum, "Techs and the City," which discussed the limits of high-tech tools in urban communities. Appelbaum argued that simple communication often trumps more elaborate online solutions when it comes to improving city residents’ lives.

“But higher tech is not always essential tech,” writes Appelbaum. “Cities could instead be making savvier investments in cheaper technology that may work better to stoke civic involvement than the more complicated, expensive products being peddled by information-technology developers.”

Ron Shiffman in the New York Times (again!)
A June 12 New York Times article, "Bloomerg Storm Plan Praised, but Faces Obstacles," quoted Pratt PSPD Professor Ron Shiffman.  The article discusses Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plans to protect New York City against climate change and the challenges of seeking approval from all the involved local, state, and federal agencies.

Pratt Institute Wins Climate Leadership Award
For the second consecutive year, Pratt Institute was one of 10 colleges and universities nationally recognized with a Climate Leadership Award by Second Nature and the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). The awards demonstrate Pratt’s continued leadership in sustainability education.
